Update on COVID-19

March 30, 2020

As I write this, Central Park is being turned into an emergency field hospital, new hospitals are being constructed in each of the Boroughs, and the USNS Comfort (Hospital Ship) is docking in the New York Harbor. These are indeed unsettling and frightening times.

I wish to commend the efforts of those on the front lines – the first responders and the medical staff throughout our city. They are literally saving lives every hour. I hear sirens differently than I used to. They used to blend into the background of city noise; Now, I hear each one individually.

We must also recognize the leadership from Mayor DeBlasio and Governor Cuomo. Regardless of one’s politics, these two men represent the best of New York.

At Masterpiece Caterers, we have hunkered down like everyone else to survive the storm. We have furloughed almost all our employees and have been working with our events for the best possible re-schedule options in the future. That’s the hardest part – not knowing when large gatherings will be safely permitted again.

At the end of last week, I found myself discouraged. So many tragedies around us, and our family experienced a death from COVID 19 with a hasty internment on Saturday that was a harsh reminder that our loved one died alone and was buried alone. Yet, on Thursday and Friday, I received several phone calls from couples wanting to get married with us in Fall/Winter of 2020 and the Spring of 2021.  It was a needed reminder that we will persevere through these trying times, and a future awaits us on the other side.

In the interim, stay healthy, protect others by protecting yourselves, and stay engaged with us on social media. We have some interesting contests planned to help pass the time.

Sincerely,

Kevin A. Mattner, President
